Before You Begin

A little preparation prevents most problems. Work through these points before attempting anything on your PlayStation 4, because the order matters and some steps cannot be undone later.

  1. Check your firmware
Go to Settings > System > System Information and write down your version. This single number decides whether any method is possible for you.
  2. Confirm compatibility
Compare your firmware against current community support. If you are on the latest version, there may be nothing available yet, and that is okay.
  3. Disconnect from updates
Because the console cannot be downgraded, avoid system updates entirely. Do not let the PS4 update automatically while you prepare.
  4. Back up your data
Save game files and account data to USB or the cloud first, so nothing important is at risk if you need to rebuild.
  5. Read the safety page
Understand the risks and the temporary nature of the unlock before you start.

The most damaging mistake is updating your firmware. An update can permanently remove your only path to homebrew, and it can never be reversed. Treat staying on your current version as the top priority.

Take your time. There is no rush, and rushing is how data gets lost. Once these steps are complete, you are ready to read the model and firmware guides in detail.
