Checking your firmware
Checking Your Firmware
Before doing anything else, find out which system software version your PlayStation 4 is running. This number decides what is possible, so it is always the first step.
- Open SettingsFrom the main menu, scroll to and select the Settings icon at the top of the screen.
- Go to SystemScroll down and choose System from the settings list.
- Open System InformationSelect System Information. Your current firmware appears next to the system software field.
- Record the numberWrite the version down exactly as shown. You will compare it against community compatibility notes.
The full path is Settings > System > System Information. The version shown there is what you keep unless you choose to update.
While checking, do not accept any update prompt that appears. Because the PS4 cannot be downgraded, updating to see "the latest" can permanently remove your ability to run homebrew. Just read the number and back out.
Once you have your version recorded, head to the compatibility and firmware pages to see where it stands. If you are on a supported range, you can plan your next steps. If you are on the newest firmware, the safest move is to stay exactly where you are and wait for community developments rather than updating further.
