Why firmware matters
Why Firmware Matters Most
If you take away one lesson from this wiki, let it be this: on the PlayStation 4, firmware decides everything. Hardware model, storage size, and accessories are secondary. The version of system software you run is the gatekeeper for all homebrew.
The reason
Every software jailbreak depends on a specific weakness present in a particular range of firmware versions. When Sony releases an update, it typically closes those weaknesses. Combined with the fact that the PS4 cannot be downgraded, this means firmware is a one-way ratchet: you can only move to newer, more locked-down versions, never back to a supported one.
| Factor | Effect on homebrew |
|---|---|
| Firmware version | Decisive — determines whether any method exists |
| Console model | Minor — tools work across original, Slim, and Pro |
| Storage / accessories | Negligible — no effect on compatibility |
Protect your version
Because firmware is permanent and decisive, the smartest thing you can do is never update if you want to mod. A supported firmware is worth more than any hardware upgrade.
This is why every guide here begins by asking you to check Settings > System > System Information. Once you know your version, you know almost everything about what your console can and cannot do. Make that check your first and most important step.
