Safety & Risks

Running homebrew on the PlayStation 4 is generally low-risk compared to hardware modifications, because the jailbreak is software-based and temporary. Still, you should understand what can go wrong before you start.

Updating is the biggest danger. Because the PS4 cannot be downgraded, a single firmware update can permanently end your ability to run homebrew. This mistake is irreversible. Decline every update prompt if you want to keep modding.

Online services

Using a jailbroken console on Sony's online network is risky. Modified consoles can be detected and accounts can be banned. The safest practice is to keep your modded console offline, or at least disconnected from official online services while it is unlocked.

Data loss

Mistakes during setup can occasionally lead to corrupted saves or system data. Always back up your important files to USB or the cloud before you begin, so a problem never costs you anything irreplaceable.

Stability

The unlock is temporary and resets on every reboot. Homebrew tools are community-made and may crash or behave unexpectedly. A crash usually just requires a restart, after which the console boots normally and unmodified until you re-run the jailbreak.

Legal and ethical use

This wiki supports only legal homebrew and emulation of games you own. Do not use these tools for piracy. Keeping your activity legitimate protects both you and the community that builds these tools.

If you are unsure about any step, stop and research it before continuing.
