Regional notes

Regional Notes

The PlayStation 4 was sold worldwide, and while the homebrew experience is largely the same everywhere, a few region-related points are worth knowing.

Firmware is global

System software versions are essentially the same across regions. A given firmware number behaves the same whether your console was bought in North America, Europe, Asia, or elsewhere. This means the all-important no-downgrade rule and the supported-versus-unsupported distinction apply identically no matter where you are.

Account regions

Your PlayStation Network account is tied to a region you chose when creating it. This affects store access and some online features, but it does not change whether your firmware is jailbreakable. Homebrew compatibility is decided by the system software version, not by your account's country.

Power and accessories

Hardware differs slightly between regions in power supply voltage and bundled cables, but these differences have no bearing on homebrew. The internal behavior relevant to unlocking is consistent across regional variants.

Same rules everywhere

Wherever your console came from, the guidance is identical: check your firmware under Settings > System > System Information, and never update if you want to mod, because the PS4 cannot be downgraded in any region.

In short, region affects your store and accessories, not your homebrew options. Focus on firmware, and the rest follows the same way for everyone.
