DreamShell Applications

DreamShell is a full-featured operating environment for the Dreamcast that runs from a disc or optical drive emulator. Beyond launching games, it bundles a suite of built-in applications that turn the console into a flexible little computer. software

The core apps

The DreamShell desktop presents a windowed interface controlled with the standard pad. From there you can reach a range of tools without needing a separate disc for each one.

  • File Manager browses the SD card, CD, and internal storage, letting you copy and delete files.
  • ISO Loader mounts and boots disc images directly, the feature most people install it for.
  • VMU Manager reads, writes, and backs up saves between memory cards and storage.
  • Media players handle audio and certain video formats for playback on the TV.
  • Settings control video mode, region behavior, and network configuration.

Loading images

The ISO Loader is the heart of DreamShell for most users. It supports GDI and CDI images stored on an SD card adapter or a hard drive connected through the serial or expansion port, and it can patch certain titles for region or video compatibility on the fly.

Storage options

DreamShell can read from an SD card reader wired to the serial port, an IDE drive via the expansion bay, or a USB adapter on some setups. An SD card is the simplest starting point.
