Safety & Risks
Opening your Dreamcast and installing hardware carries real risk. Static discharge, forced connectors, and stray solder can permanently damage the console. Proceed only if you are comfortable and prepared to lose the unit in a worst case. Work slowly and never force anything.
Compared with many consoles, the Dreamcast is forgiving, but a few hazards deserve respect.
Electrostatic discharge
The mainboard is sensitive to static. Work on a non-carpeted surface, ground yourself before handling boards, and avoid touching exposed contacts unnecessarily.
Connector damage
Solderless ODEs like GDEMU seat onto delicate connectors. If a board does not drop in easily, stop and check alignment rather than pushing. Bent pins are difficult to repair.
Wrong board revision
Installing a mod intended for a different revision can waste money and, in some cases, risk damage. Always confirm VA0 versus VA1 before buying.
Power and the PSU
The internal power supply handles mains voltage. Never work on a plugged-in console, and give it time to discharge after unplugging.
Reduce the risk
Back up your VMU saves first, photograph each step as you disassemble, and keep screws organised. If you are unsure, the reversible MIL-CD route needs no disassembly at all.
