Installing USB-GDROM
Installing USB-GDROM
This procedure involves opening your Dreamcast and removing the optical drive. USB-GDROM supports both VA0 and VA1 boards, but you must still work carefully. Use a static-safe surface, never force a connector, and proceed only if you accept the risk to your console.
USB-GDROM installs much like other ODEs, with the bonus of automatic region patching once running. Work through the phases in order.
- Prepare storageLoad your USB stick or SD card with images in GDI or CDI format. Back up your VMU saves before opening anything.
- Open the consoleRemove the underside screws, including the tri-wing, and lift the top shell, minding the internal cabling.
- Remove the GD-ROM driveUnscrew the original optical drive and lift it out, disconnecting its ribbon and power leads gently.
- Install the USB-GDROMConnect the board to the drive connector, following the orientation in the manufacturer's instructions, and secure it so nothing shifts.
- Connect storage and testAttach your USB or SD storage, reassemble enough to power on, and confirm a game loads with region patching working before closing up.
Imports just work
Thanks to on-the-fly region patching, you generally do not need to patch images individually. Insert a foreign title and it should boot.
