Installing GDEMU

Installing GDEMU

This procedure means opening your Dreamcast and removing the optical drive. GDEMU is designed for the VA1 board only — confirm your revision before starting. Work on a static-safe surface, never force connectors, and proceed only if you accept the risk to the console.

With a VA1 console and a prepared SD card, GDEMU installs without soldering. Follow each phase carefully.

  1. Confirm board and prepare
Verify the mainboard is marked VA1. Prepare your SD card with images as described on the SD card preparation page. Back up your VMU saves.
  2. Open the console
Remove the four screws on the underside, including the tri-wing, and lift the top shell. Take care with the internal cables.
  3. Remove the GD-ROM drive
Unscrew and lift out the original optical drive, disconnecting its ribbon and power connectors gently.
  4. Seat the GDEMU
Drop the GDEMU board into the connector left by the drive, ensuring it aligns squarely. It should seat without force.
  5. Insert card and test
Fit the SD card, then reassemble enough to power on and confirm the menu appears and a game loads before closing fully.

If it does not seat

A board that resists is misaligned. Lift it out and try again rather than pressing harder, to avoid bending connector pins.
