RGB over SCART delivers one of the best images you can get on a standard-definition CRT television. By carrying the red, green, and blue color signals on separate wires, it avoids the blurring and color artifacts that plague composite video, producing clean lines and accurate color at 480i. AV
How it works
An RGB SCART cable taps the console's RGB output and routes it to the multi-pin SCART connector common on European televisions. The Dreamcast outputs RGB at full strength, so no external amplifier is usually required, and the result rivals VGA quality on a CRT that supports it.
Things to check
- Your television must support RGB on its SCART input; not every SCART socket does.
- Use a properly wired cable, ideally one with the sync line handled correctly, to avoid a dark or rolling picture.
- SCART is rare outside Europe, so users elsewhere may prefer VGA or S-Video.
RGB on other displays
Outside SCART regions you can still enjoy RGB by feeding the signal into an upscaler that accepts SCART input, then outputting to a modern display. This combination keeps the clean RGB quality while making it usable on a flat-panel television.
Interlaced signal
RGB SCART produces a 480i interlaced picture, which looks excellent on a CRT but shows scanlines and flicker that some upscalers smooth out. For progressive output, VGA remains the better choice.
