Accessories
Beyond the flashcard and microSD, a handful of accessories make the DS more useful or more pleasant to live with. None are required, but several are worth knowing about.
microSD readers
A reliable USB microSD reader is the one accessory you genuinely need, since you will move files between the card and your computer often. A cheap, sturdy reader beats a flashy one that loses connection mid-copy.
Slot-2 expansion packs
The slot-2 port accepts memory expansion packs that give certain DS homebrew extra RAM, most famously for the DS web browser and some media players. A rumble pak adds force feedback to compatible games. These only fit the DS and DS Lite, not the DSi.
Power and protection
- Spare chargers and batteries keep an aging console alive; original DS and Lite use different connectors, so match the model.
- Replacement styluses are cheap and easy to lose.
- Carry cases protect both the console and the thin flashcard, which is easy to misplace.
Charging grips and stands
Optional but handy for long sessions, especially on the dimmer original DS where you may keep it plugged in.
Keep it simple
A good reader and a spare microSD cover ninety percent of real needs. optional
