Original DS
The original Nintendo DS, often nicknamed the "Phat," is the first model in the family. It launched the dual-screen, touch-driven design and remains a fine platform for flashcard use today.
Design and screens
The Phat has a thick, boxy shell and two screens that are dimmer than later models, with no brightness control. The build is rugged and the hinge is solid. Battery life is generous thanks to the modest screen backlight.
Why some people prefer it
Its standout feature is the slot-2 port. On the Phat, Game Boy Advance cartridges and expansion packs sit completely flush with the body, giving the sturdiest fit of any DS model. If you plan to use GBA flashcarts or RAM expansion packs for homebrew, the original DS is the more comfortable host.
Flashcard use
Slot-1 modding is identical to the Lite: insert a reputable card with a prepared microSD and boot. Modern cards include NoPass, so the Phat boots them directly with no extra steps.
