Battery replacement
Lithium batteries are a safety risk. A swollen, puffy, or leaking battery must never be punctured, bent, or charged. Use a correct replacement rated for your model, and stop immediately if you feel heat or smell anything unusual.
Replacing the Battery
Rechargeable DS batteries lose capacity over years of use, leading to short playtime or a console that only runs while plugged in. A fresh battery restores portability. The job is simple on models with a removable battery cover and a little more involved on others.
- Identify the battery. Confirm the exact battery model for your console, since the original and Lite use different packs and capacities.
- Power down. Switch off and unplug the charger before opening anything.
- Access the battery. On most units a small screw holds a cover; remove it to reveal the battery and its connector or contacts.
- Swap the pack. Lift out the old battery and fit the replacement, matching the connector orientation or contact polarity exactly.
- Close and charge. Refit the cover, then perform a full charge so the new pack settles and reports capacity correctly.
Disposal and Tips
- Recycle the old battery at a proper e-waste or battery drop-off; do not bin it.
- If runtime is still poor with a new battery, suspect the charge port or charger rather than the pack.
- Buy from a reputable source, as low-quality cells often overstate their capacity.
