nds-bootstrap

nds-bootstrap

nds-bootstrap is an open-source loader that lets DS software run as if it were booting from a real game cartridge, while actually reading the data from your SD card. It is the engine behind many modern launchers and is especially valued for improving compatibility on cards whose original firmware struggled with certain titles.

Why It Matters

  • Better compatibility with games that older flashcart kernels refused to boot.
  • Cleaner saving, writing save files to the SD card in a predictable place.
  • Cheat support and other features layered on top of the boot process.

You Rarely Run It Directly

Most users never launch nds-bootstrap by hand. Instead they use a front-end menu that calls it behind the scenes, presenting a clean game list while nds-bootstrap handles the actual loading.

Practical Notes

Keep the loader and its data files updated, because compatibility improves steadily as the project matures. If a specific game fails, check whether a newer build fixes it before assuming the game is unsupported. nds-bootstrap also distinguishes between a faster direct boot mode and a more compatible mode; switching modes is a common fix when a game hangs at startup. Because it reads from the card constantly, a fast and reliable microSD card noticeably improves loading and reduces stutter.
