Useful Homebrew Applications

Beyond games, a healthy library of utility homebrew exists for the DS. These apps make the handheld a surprisingly capable little computer for offline tasks, and most are free and open source.

Common Categories

  • File managers let you copy, move, and delete files on the SD card directly from the DS, handy when no computer is nearby.
  • Media players handle music and simple video, covered in more depth on the Media page.
  • Ebook and text readers turn the bottom screen into a comfortable reading surface with touch page turns.
  • Drawing and note tools use the stylus and touchscreen for sketching or quick notes.
  • Diagnostics test the screens, buttons, touchscreen calibration, and speakers, which is invaluable when repairing hardware.

Picking Builds

Many apps ship as a single .nds file. If a program looks for extra data, keep its companion folder beside it on the card. Reading the included readme avoids most "it just closes" problems.

Tips

Group apps into folders so the launcher list stays readable. If an app freezes on a black screen, it usually needs DLDI patching or a newer build that supports your flashcart. Keeping a tested diagnostic app on the card is wise, because it confirms whether a fault is software or a genuine hardware problem.
