Cleaning

Clean a DS only when powered off with the battery removed. Keep liquids away from the speakers, microphone, and any openings, and never spray cleaner directly onto the console. Excess moisture inside the case can short the board.

Cleaning and Care

Regular gentle cleaning keeps a DS looking good and working reliably. Most performance problems blamed on hardware are really just dirty contacts, so cleaning is often the cheapest fix of all.

  1. Power down. Switch off and remove the battery before any cleaning begins.
  2. Wipe surfaces. Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth on the shell and a dry cloth on the screens. Avoid paper towels, which scratch.
  3. Clean the cartridge contacts. For game and flashcart connectors, lightly use isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, then let everything dry fully before reinserting.
  4. Clear the ports. Gently remove lint and dust from the card slots and headphone jack with a soft, dry brush or a careful puff of air.
  5. Care for the stylus and touchscreen. Wipe the screen with a dry cloth and inspect the stylus tip for grit that could scratch the panel.

Good Habits

  • Store the console closed and out of direct sunlight to prevent yellowing.
  • Keep cartridges in cases so their contacts stay clean.
  • Charge with a known-good cable to avoid stressing the charge port.

A few minutes of routine care prevents most of the intermittent faults that send people searching for repairs.
