FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does homebrew permanently change my DS?

No. Homebrew runs from a flashcart in the game slot. Remove the card and the console behaves exactly as it did from the factory, which makes the whole hobby low-risk.

Do I need to solder anything?

For software, no. Running games, emulators, and apps only requires a flashcart and an SD card. Soldering only enters the picture for advanced hardware mods like IPS screens or shoulder-button repairs.

Why does my game freeze on a white screen?

Usually a bad file copy, a slow or counterfeit microSD card, or outdated loader firmware. Re-copy the game, update the loader, and try a known-good card.

Which Flashcart Should I Pick?

Any reputable Slot-1 cart runs games and apps well. For emulating GBA, SNES, or PlayStation, the DSTwo stands out because it has its own processor. Avoid no-name clones, which are inconsistent.

Why did my save disappear?

Most often a save-type mismatch or a failing card. Always back saves up to a computer, and check the Save Types and Save Issues pages.

Can the DS play normal video files?

Not directly. Video must be converted on a computer into the low-resolution format a DS player expects before it will play.

Is it legal?

Running homebrew you are entitled to use is generally fine. Copying games you do not own is not. This wiki covers homebrew and hardware, not piracy.
