What you can do

What you can do

A flashcard turns your DS into a flexible little machine. The most popular uses fall into a few categories, and most cards handle all of them at once.

Homebrew software

Run community-made applications: media players, file managers, drawing tools, ebook readers, and dozens of small games written for the DS. Homebrew is free, legal, and a great reason to mod even if you own no commercial titles.

Game backups

Load .nds ROM files of games you own from the microSD card. A flashcard can hold a whole library, so you carry one cartridge instead of a wallet of carts. Saves are written back to the microSD.

Emulation

Lightweight emulators run NES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color titles in software. For heavier systems the SuperCard DSTwo stands out: its onboard CPU can emulate GBA, SNES, and even PlayStation games that ordinary cards cannot manage.

Quality-of-life tools

Cheat code engines, real-time save tools, screenshot capture, and download-play servers all become available. homebrew backups emulation

What it cannot do

The DS cannot magically play GameCube or 3DS games. It also will not give you online access to defunct Nintendo servers. Keep expectations grounded in 2005-era hardware and you will be delighted.
