Flashcards overview
A slot-1 flashcard is what makes DS modding possible. Understanding how it works removes most of the mystery and helps you shop wisely.
How a flashcard works
The card is shaped exactly like a DS game and slides into slot-1. Inside is a microSD reader. You copy the card's kernel (its menu firmware) plus your .nds files onto the microSD, insert it into the card, and insert the card into the console. The DS sees the card as a normal cartridge and boots its menu, from which you launch anything on the microSD.
NoPass is built in
Early DS modding required a separate "passthrough" cartridge to trick the console into booting unsigned code. Modern slot-1 cards include NoPass circuitry, so they boot directly with no second cartridge and no exploit. This is why DS modding is so simple today.
Families of cards
- R4 and R4i-SDHC and their clones: the cheap, ubiquitous workhorses.
- Acekard and similar: clean menus, strong homebrew support.
- SuperCard DSTwo: a premium card with an onboard CPU for heavy emulation.
Clones vary in quality. Many R4 and DSTT clones are counterfeit or abandoned. Buy from a reputable seller so your card keeps working.
