R4 / R4i-SDHC

The R4 is the most famous DS flashcard ever made, and its successor the R4i-SDHC remains the default recommendation for everyday use. It is cheap, simple, and does the core job well.

What it does well

  • Plays DS backups and homebrew from microSD.
  • Supports large SDHC microSD cards, unlike the original R4.
  • Boots directly thanks to built-in NoPass.
  • Runs a straightforward menu that new users pick up quickly.

What it does not do

The R4 has no onboard CPU, so heavy emulation (GBA, SNES, PlayStation) is out of reach. It runs lightweight emulators for older 8-bit systems through homebrew, but for serious emulation you want a SuperCard DSTwo instead.

The clone minefield

"R4" is now a brand worn by countless clones of wildly varying quality. Some are excellent; others are counterfeit junk that fails after an update. Names like R4i-SDHC are copied freely, so the seller matters more than the label.

Buy from a reputable shop. Cheap marketplace listings are full of dead or fake R4 cards. A trustworthy seller is the difference between a card that lasts years and one that never boots.
