Before you begin
Before You Begin
A little preparation makes the whole process smooth. Developer Mode is official and low-risk, but it helps to know what you are signing up for and to have everything ready before you start.
Set the right expectations
Dev Mode is for running homebrew and emulators with files you legally own. It will not pirate retail games, and it is not a jailbreak. If that matches what you want, read on.
Gather what you need
- An Xbox One or Series console, fully updated.
- A Microsoft account you control.
- A Partner Center developer registration (individual onboarding is free as of June 2025).
- A PC or laptop on the same network, for the Device Portal.
- Optional but recommended: external USB storage for your app data and game files.
Understand the limits up front
Each app is capped at 2 GB of memory, and apps run in a restricted sandbox. Some emulators need external file access enabled before they can see your files. Performance depends heavily on which console you own.
Activating Developer Mode reboots the console into a separate environment. Your retail games and saves are untouched, but you do switch back and forth rather than running both at once.
Take your time
There is no rush and nothing irreversible here. Read through the account and activation guides fully before starting, and you will avoid the few common snags.
