File access / ROMs

File Access / ROMs Not Found

A frequent emulation frustration is an emulator that runs fine but cannot see your ROMs. The files exist, yet the browser inside the app shows an empty folder. This is almost always a path or permissions issue.

Check the Path

  • Drive recognition. Confirm the console actually mounted the drive. An unmounted or wrongly formatted drive shows nothing.
  • Correct directory. Point the emulator at the exact folder where the ROMs live, not a parent folder. Some cores do not recurse into subfolders.
  • Filesystem. Emulators reading external media usually expect a PC-readable format such as NTFS. A drive formatted as Xbox game storage is not browsable by the app.

A drive formatted for Xbox games and a drive formatted for file access are mutually exclusive. You cannot put browsable ROMs on a drive the console reformatted for game storage.

File Issues

  • Confirm the ROM extension matches what the core expects. Wrong or doubled extensions hide files.
  • Check for required BIOS files placed in the system folder the emulator points to.
  • Avoid extremely long paths and unusual characters in folder names.

Use Device Portal

You can also transfer files into the app's own storage through Device Portal's file browser, which sidesteps external drive formatting entirely.
