Dev Mode Won't Activate

Dev Mode activation is the gateway to all Xbox One homebrew. When it stalls, the cause is almost always account, network, or registration related rather than a hardware fault.

  1. Account check. Confirm you are signed in with the same Microsoft account you registered as a developer. A mismatch is the single most common blocker.
  2. Registration status. Dev Mode requires a registered developer account on the dashboard. If registration is still processing, activation will not complete.
  3. Network. The activation app must reach Microsoft's servers. Verify the console is online and not behind a restrictive network.

Common Fixes

  • Run the Dev Mode Activation app, request a code, and enter it on the partner dashboard from a browser. Codes expire, so use a fresh one.
  • If the app says activation is queued, wait. The switch into Dev Mode can take several minutes and one or more reboots.
  • Power-cycle fully if the console hangs on the transition screen.

Do not interrupt power during the actual switch between retail and Dev Mode. Pulling the plug mid-transition can leave the console in an inconsistent state requiring a reset.

Still Stuck

Sign out, sign back in, then relaunch the activation app. A stale session token blocks more activations than any other single issue.
