AV output mods
An AV mod requires tapping video and audio signals on the mainboard and drilling the shell for connectors. Remove batteries and unplug power first, work slowly near the inverter, and double-check every solder joint. Incorrect wiring can short the console.
AV Output Mods
An AV output mod lets the Game Gear send its picture and sound to an external television or monitor. Because the console generates a composite-style signal internally, enthusiasts have developed mods and small boards that capture and condition it for a standard display.
av video- Choose an approach. Decide between a hand-wired composite tap and a dedicated AV mod board, which cleans up the signal and adds proper sync and amplification.
- Open the console. Disassemble the shell and locate the video and audio test points called out in your mod's documentation.
- Solder the taps. Wire video, audio, and ground to the connector or mod board, keeping leads short and tidy.
- Mount the jack. Drill a clean hole in the shell and secure the AV connector, ensuring it clears the internal boards.
- Test. Connect to a display and confirm a stable picture and clear sound before final assembly.
Raw vs. Conditioned Signal
A bare composite tap may look noisy or roll on some displays. A purpose-built AV board adds buffering and sync correction for a far more stable image, and is worth the extra cost for regular TV play.
AV mods pair naturally with the controller-port mod for couch play. See that page to add external control once your video output is working.
