Before you begin
Before You Begin
A successful Game Gear project is mostly preparation. Rushing into an open console with the wrong tools is how boards get damaged, so spend a little time getting set up before you pick up an iron.
Set your expectations
The Game Gear needs soldering work, and the capacitors are small surface-mount parts on a vintage board. This is achievable for a careful beginner, but it is not a no-tools job. If you have never soldered, practice on a scrap board first.
Plan the order of work
- Recap first. Every other improvement assumes a healthy, recapped board. Do not install a new screen or flashcart onto a console with failing caps.
- One change at a time. Test after each step so you can trace any new fault to the work you just did.
- Identify your model. Know your board revision before ordering screen kits or caps.
Prepare your workspace
- A clean, well-lit, static-safe surface with room to lay out screws.
- Small containers or a labeled tray so hardware does not get lost.
- Good ventilation for soldering fumes.
- Photos of each step before disassembly to guide reassembly.
There is no firmware stage and nothing to back up digitally, so once your bench is ready and your parts have arrived, you can move straight to the safety page and then the recap.
