Vertical lines
Troubleshooting: Vertical Lines
Vertical lines, columns of dead or stuck pixels, or bands of missing image are a classic Game Gear display fault. They typically stem from the connection between the LCD and its driver, or from degradation within the original panel itself. The pattern of the lines hints at the cause.
troubleshooting screen| Symptom | Likely Cause |
| One or a few static vertical lines | Failing LCD ribbon bond or driver connection |
| Lines that shift with pressure or heat | Loose or aging ribbon contact |
| Wide missing columns or blocks | Degraded original LCD panel |
| Lines after a screen mod | Cold solder joint or unseated connector |
What to Try
- Gently reseat the screen ribbon connector and clean its contacts.
- If lines move when you flex or warm the area, the ribbon bond is failing.
- After a mod, recheck every solder joint and the connector seating.
Original Panels Rarely Recover
Ribbon bonds on the original LCD degrade permanently and are difficult to repair reliably. Reseating may help temporarily, but persistent lines usually mean the panel is failing. Replacing it with a modern screen is the lasting fix.
If lines appeared right after installing a McWill or IPS kit, the cause is almost always a wiring or connector issue, not the new panel. Revisit the installing a new screen page and inspect your joints.
