Dim/failed screen

Troubleshooting: Dim or Failed Screen

A dark, dim, or blank screen on a console that otherwise powers on usually points to the backlight, the inverter on the power board, or the aging original LCD itself. Sound playing normally while the screen stays dark confirms the console is running and the fault is in the display path.

Image fades or flickersFailing power-board capacitors

What to Try

  • Tilt the unit toward a strong light; a faint visible image means the LCD lives but the backlight is dead.
  • Recap the power board, since failing capacitors starve the inverter and dim the backlight.
  • Reseat the screen ribbon connector in case of intermittent contact.

Consider a Screen Mod

The original backlight and LCD are decades old and fade or fail with age. Rather than chase a dying tube, many owners fit a modern McWill or IPS LCD, which is brighter and far more reliable. It often solves the problem permanently.

If a recap and reseating do not restore a bright image, the original display is likely at the end of its life. See the screen mods overview and installation pages to upgrade it.
