Restoring a Game Gear is rewarding, but it is physical work on aging electronics. Understand what can go wrong before you open the shell.
Personal safety
- Heat: a soldering iron reaches temperatures that cause instant burns. Use a stand and never leave it on unattended.
- Fumes: solder and flux produce fumes. Work in a ventilated area or use a fume extractor.
- Residue: leaked capacitor electrolyte is corrosive. Avoid skin contact and wash your hands after handling boards.
- Eyes: wear protection when trimming leads or flicking flux.
Risks to the console
- Lifted pads: too much heat or force can tear copper pads off the board. Work low and slow.
- Reversed polarity: installing a capacitor backwards can damage it or the circuit. Double-check orientation.
- Ribbon cables: the screen and board ribbons are brittle and crack easily.
- Stripped screws: use the correct security bit to avoid rounding the heads.
None of these risks involve firmware, since the Game Gear has none. Every danger here is physical, which means careful technique is your best protection. If a step feels beyond your skill level, practice on a scrap board first.
