Is My Game Gear Compatible?

The good news: every Game Gear ever made is a candidate for a recap, and that is the repair almost everyone needs. Compatibility questions really only come up with the optional upgrades, since board revisions and regions differ in small ways. Use the table below as a quick guide, then confirm against your own board before ordering parts.

Full recapAll units, all regionsThe universal fix. Capacitor count varies slightly by main-board revision.
McWill LCDAll unitsPremium sharp panel; kit includes adapters for common board revisions.

Because there is no firmware, you never have to worry about software versions or region locks at the system level. The only real compatibility checks are physical: which main-board revision you have and, for screen kits, whether the included flex cables and brackets match it. The model-identification page explains how to read your revision so you can buy with confidence.
