What You'll Need
Gather everything before you start so you are not stuck mid-job with the console half open. Most of this is for the recap, which is your first task; the upgrade-specific parts can wait.
For opening the console
- A security screwdriver with a tri-wing bit for the shell screws, plus a standard Phillips for internal screws.
- A plastic spudger or pry tool to separate the case without scratching it.
- A tray to hold screws and small parts.
For the recap
- A full capacitor kit from Console5, ZedLabz, or Retrosix matched to your board revision.
- A temperature-controlled soldering iron with a fine tip.
- Quality solder, flux, and desoldering braid.
- Isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush for cleaning residue.
- Tweezers and a magnifier or loupe for the small SMD parts.
For optional upgrades
- A McWill or IPS screen kit if replacing the display.
- An EverDrive-GG flashcart, plus a donor shell if it is a bare board.
- Hookup wire for AV-out or controller-port mods.
There is no firmware and no software toolchain to install, so once your bench, tools, and a matched capacitor kit are on hand, you are ready to begin.
