Controller-port mod

This mod involves soldering directly to the button traces or the controller-input lines on the mainboard and cutting the shell for a port. Power down and remove batteries first. A wiring mistake can connect inputs incorrectly or short power lines, so verify the pinout before powering on.

Controller-Port Mod

A controller-port mod adds an external connector so you can play the Game Gear with a separate controller, which is ideal when paired with an AV output mod for big-screen play. The console's directional and action inputs are wired out to a standard-style port.

  1. Map the inputs. Identify the test points or button pads for up, down, left, right, the two action buttons, start, and ground.
  2. Plan the port. Choose a connector style and decide where on the shell it will mount without fouling internal parts.
  3. Wire each line. Run a wire from every input to the matching pin on your chosen connector, keeping ground common.
  4. Mount and secure. Cut the shell, fit the port, and anchor it so cable strain does not stress the joints.
  5. Test every direction and button. Confirm all inputs register before closing the case.

Keep the Built-in Pad Working

Wiring in parallel with the existing buttons lets both the handheld's own controls and the external controller work. Decide whether you want shared or exclusive control before soldering.

Combined with an AV mod, this turns the Game Gear into a compact console for TV play. Refer to the AV output mods page to complete the setup.
