Recap Tools
The right tools make a recap straightforward; the wrong ones make it a fight that risks the board. Here is what belongs on your bench before you start.
Essentials
- Temperature-controlled soldering iron with a fine conical or chisel tip. Stable heat is what protects the pads.
- Full capacitor kit from Console5, ZedLabz, or Retrosix, matched to your board revision so every value and count is correct.
- Quality solder in a thin gauge for fine SMD work.
- Flux to help old joints release and new joints flow cleanly.
- Desoldering braid to wick excess solder off the pads.
Cleaning and inspection
- Isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush to neutralize and remove corrosive electrolyte residue.
- Magnifier or loupe to inspect the tiny joints and confirm polarity.
- Fine tweezers to place the small surface-mount capacitors accurately.
Disassembly
- Tri-wing security bit for the shell screws, plus a Phillips for internal hardware.
- Plastic spudger to open the case without marring it.
Do not substitute a cheap fixed-temperature iron for the recap. Uncontrolled heat is the leading cause of lifted pads on these vintage boards.
With these on hand and a matched kit, you are fully equipped to recap. No firmware tools are needed since the job is entirely physical.
