Testing after recap
Testing After the Recap
Before you close the shell, confirm the work paid off. Testing while the boards are still accessible means any fault is quick to revisit instead of buried under reassembly.
Power on carefully
- Use a correctly rated adapter or fresh batteries.
- Watch and listen for anything abnormal as it powers up, and be ready to cut power if something smells hot.
Check the symptoms that drove the recap
- Audio: sound should be clear and full, with no crackle or distortion. This is the most telling result of a good recap.
- Power: the console should switch on instantly and stay stable, with no random shutdowns.
- Video: the picture should be steady and evenly lit, free of the waviness that unfiltered power caused.
If something is still wrong
- Recheck polarity on every new capacitor; a single reversed cap can spoil the result.
- Inspect joints under magnification for bridges or cold connections.
- Look for missed corrosion where old electrolyte may have damaged a trace.
Once audio, power, and video all check out, reassemble the shell. With a verified, healthy board you now have a solid foundation for the optional upgrades, whether that is a McWill or IPS screen, an EverDrive-GG, or the AV and controller mods. There is no firmware step to follow; a passing bench test means you are done.
