Button repair

Disassembly exposes delicate ribbon cables and the rubber membranes that make the buttons work. Remove batteries and unplug power first. Never force the shell halves apart, and keep track of every screw, as they differ in length.

Button Repair

Mushy, sticky, or unresponsive buttons are a common Game Gear complaint. The cause is usually worn conductive pads on the rubber membranes, dirt under the buttons, or oxidized traces on the board. Most cases are fixable with simple tools.

  1. Open the console. Remove the rear screws, separate the shell, and access the control area.
  2. Clean the contacts. Wipe the board pads and the conductive surfaces of the rubber membranes with isopropyl alcohol on a swab.
  3. Inspect the membranes. Look for worn or shiny pads. If a button still fails after cleaning, the membrane likely needs replacing.
  4. Replace if needed. Fit fresh rubber membranes and, if buttons are cracked, install new plastic ones.
  5. Reassemble and test. Confirm each direction and button responds with a crisp click.

Conductive Paint as a Fix

If a membrane is only lightly worn, conductive repair paint can restore the contact pad. Apply it sparingly and let it cure fully before reassembly. New membranes are the more durable long-term fix.

If buttons feel gritty rather than dead, the problem is usually dirt; a thorough cleaning often resolves it. See the cleaning and care page before ordering replacement parts.
