Recap overview

The recap is the foundation of every Game Gear project. Complete and verify it before adding a screen, flashcart, or any other mod. Skipping it means building on a failing board.

Recap Overview

A recap means removing every aging electrolytic capacitor from both the main board and the sound board and soldering in fresh replacements. It is the single most effective repair for a Game Gear and the one job nearly every console needs.

What it fixes

A complete recap restores audio and stable power together, and frequently clears up a dim or wavy display caused by unfiltered voltage. These are not separate repairs; they all stem from the same failing components.

Here is the shape of the job from start to finish.

  1. Buy a matched kit
Order a full set from Console5, ZedLabz, or Retrosix for your board revision.
  2. Open the console
Remove the shell and separate the stacked boards carefully.
  3. Desolder old caps
Remove every electrolytic capacitor and clean each pad.
  4. Solder new caps
Fit replacements with correct polarity, working low and slow.
  5. Clean and test
Wash away residue, then verify sound, video, and power before reassembly.

The following pages break down the actual replacement, the tools you need, and how to test the result.
