reference faq

Why does my Game Gear have no or distorted sound?

Almost always failing capacitors on the sound board. A recap is the standard cure. See the no audio and sound board pages.

Why is the screen so dim and blurry?

The original 1990 backlit LCD was never very bright and degrades with age. A McWill or IPS LCD replacement transforms the picture and improves reliability.

Do I really need to recap my console?

For most original units, yes. Electrolytic capacitors fail with age regardless of use, causing audio and power faults. Recapping the sound and power boards is considered essential maintenance.

How do I play my game library without swapping cartridges?

An EverDrive-GG flashcart stores many games on a microSD card and launches any of them from an onscreen menu. See the flashcart pages.

Can the Game Gear output to a TV?

Yes, with an AV output mod. Pair it with a controller-port mod for comfortable couch play.

Why does it eat batteries so fast?

The backlight and inefficient original power circuitry are power-hungry. Use rechargeable packs, an adapter, or an efficient reproduction power board.

Where to Start

If you just acquired a console, clean it, recap the sound and power boards, and assess the screen. That trio addresses the vast majority of problems. See the tools and software page to gather what you need.
