20-pin vs 21-pin
20-Pin vs 21-Pin
This is the single most important distinction for any Saturn ODE install. The flat ribbon cable linking the optical drive to the mainboard comes in two widths: one with 20 conductors and one with 21 conductors. ODE kits like Fenrir are sold in matching variants, and they are not interchangeable.
Why it matters
The pin count reflects the connector and signaling of your particular drive revision. Order the wrong variant and the board simply won't seat or work, and forcing it risks bending pins. There's no firmware fix for a physical mismatch.
How to tell them apart
- Open the disc lid and locate the ribbon cable at the drive.
- Count the individual conductors across the cable's width. Good lighting and a magnifier help.
- Recount to be sure: the difference of a single pin is easy to miscount.
Never guess the pin count from your model number or photos online. Revisions vary, and the only reliable method is to physically count the conductors on your own console's ribbon.
Buy to match
Once you've confirmed 20 or 21, order the matching Fenrir kit. Do this before anything else; every other planning step depends on it.
