Power supply

The power supply handles mains voltage and can store dangerous charge even when unplugged. Only work on it if you understand the risks, discharge capacitors safely, and never operate the board outside its case while probing live circuits.

Power Supply

The Saturn's internal power supply converts wall current into the low-voltage rails the console needs. Aged capacitors and worn components here cause failures to power on, random resets, or instability that can be mistaken for other faults.

  1. Recognize the symptoms. A console that will not turn on, cuts out under load, or resets unpredictably often has a power supply problem rather than a logic fault.
  2. Inspect visually. With the unit unplugged and discharged, look for bulging or leaking capacitors, scorch marks, and a blown fuse.
  3. Check the rails. If you have the skills and tools, measure the output voltages to confirm they sit within spec under load.
  4. Recap the supply. Tired electrolytic capacitors are the usual culprit. Replacing them with quality parts of matching value often restores stable power.
  5. Verify and reassemble. Confirm clean, steady operation before closing the console back up.

Region note: Saturn power supplies are built for a specific mains voltage. Running a console on the wrong voltage without a proper step-up or step-down transformer can destroy the supply, so always confirm compatibility before plugging an imported unit into your wall outlet.
