FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best video output for the Saturn?
Native RGB gives the cleanest analog picture. On a CRT, use an RGB SCART or JP-21 cable. On a modern TV, feed RGB into a quality scaler or install a digital HDMI mod such as MODE.
Why won't my Saturn read discs anymore?
The usual cause is an aging laser or a dirty lens. Clean the lens first; if reads still fail, the diode may be worn. An optical drive emulator bypasses the laser entirely and is the most durable fix.
Can I play import games?
Not directly, because the Saturn is region-locked. A region-switching cartridge, an ODE with a region setting, or an internal mod lets you run out-of-region games.
My clock keeps resetting. What's wrong?
The internal coin-cell battery that backs the clock and internal saves has drained. Replace it with the same cell type, and back up internal saves to a cartridge first.
What's an ODE and do I need one?
An optical drive emulator replaces the CD drive with a solid-state loader that reads images from an SD card. It is ideal if your drive is failing or you want convenient loading without stressing the laser.
How do I expand my save storage?
Use a backup memory cartridge in the rear slot. It holds far more than internal memory, and you can copy saves between the two using the built-in memory manager.
Is homebrew safe to run?
Yes, when sourced from the creators or reputable archives. Homebrew is original community software, distinct from copies of commercial games.
