Installing Fenrir

Installing Fenrir

This install requires opening the shell and working with the fragile drive ribbon. Confirm your 20 vs 21 pin kit before starting, and never force a mismatched board. Work on a static-free surface with the console unplugged.

Fenrir replaces the optical drive entirely, so the original mechanism comes out and the board takes its place, loading from an SD card.

  1. Prepare
Unplug the console, gather your tools, and confirm you have the correct pin variant of the Fenrir kit. Prepare your SD card with the right firmware in advance.
  2. Open the shell
Remove the case screws and separate the housing carefully with a plastic pry tool, exposing the optical drive assembly.
  3. Remove the drive
Release the ribbon latch gently and disconnect the original drive. Lift it out without straining nearby connectors.
  4. Fit the board
Seat the Fenrir in the drive's place and connect its ribbon to the matching 20-pin or 21-pin header. It should seat without force.
  5. Insert the SD card
Load your prepared SD card into the Fenrir's slot.
  6. Test before closing
Power on and confirm the boot menu appears and a game loads. Only then reassemble the shell.

If it won't boot

Recheck the ribbon orientation and your pin count. A reversed or wrong-variant connection is the usual culprit.
