Controllers
Controllers
The Saturn is celebrated for its controllers, particularly its digital pad, which is widely regarded as one of the best for 2D fighters and shooters. Modding doesn't change how controllers connect, but a few details are worth knowing as you build out your setup.
Standard pads
The original digital control pad plugs into the front ports and needs no special handling. It works identically whether you boot from the original drive, an ODE, or a cartridge.
Analog and specialty controllers
- 3D Control Pad — Adds an analog stick and trigger, useful for certain later titles.
- Arcade sticks — Popular for fighters; fully compatible with modded consoles.
- Light guns — These rely on CRT timing and may not function on modern flat panels regardless of how the game is loaded.
Imports and region
Controllers are not region-locked, so a Japanese pad works on a US console and vice versa. Once you've added a region-free mod, you can mix import controllers and import games freely.
Good news
No controller modifications are required for any ODE or cartridge install. Your existing pads carry over unchanged, so you can focus your effort on the drive replacement itself.
