Identifying drive pins
Identifying Your Drive Pins
Before ordering an ODE, you must determine whether your Saturn's optical drive uses a 20-pin or 21-pin ribbon cable. This is a physical inspection you can do without tools, and it decides which kit to buy.
Step by step
- Power off and unplug the console, then let it sit briefly.
- Open the disc lid and locate the flat ribbon cable running from the drive to the mainboard.
- Look at where the ribbon meets its connector and count the individual conductors across the width.
- Use bright light and, if possible, a magnifier. The conductors are fine and easy to miscount.
- Recount at least once. The whole decision turns on a single pin's difference.
Do not rely on model numbers, online photos, or guesswork. Hardware revisions vary, so the only trustworthy method is counting the conductors on your own console's ribbon.
What to do with the answer
Once you have a confident count, order the matching ODE kit, for example the 20-pin or 21-pin Fenrir variant. A mismatched board won't seat and can bend pins.
Pair it with region
Record the pin count next to your region and BIOS version. These three facts together unlock the correct purchase on every method page.
