Internal save battery
The Saturn's internal battery is a standard coin cell, not a rechargeable pack, but always power off and unplug the console before opening it. Never short the battery terminals, and dispose of old cells properly.
Internal Save Battery
A small coin-cell battery keeps the Saturn's internal save memory and real-time clock alive while the console is unplugged. Over years of use these cells drain, and a dead battery causes lost internal saves and a clock that resets to a default date on every boot.
- Confirm the symptom. If the system date resets each time you power on, or internal saves vanish between sessions, the battery is almost certainly exhausted.
- Back up first. Copy any internal saves you still have to a backup memory cartridge before disturbing the battery, since the act of replacing it clears internal memory.
- Open the console. Remove the case screws and locate the coin-cell holder on the mainboard. Note the cell type printed on the old battery.
- Swap the cell. Slide out the old battery and fit a fresh one of the same type, observing correct polarity. A holder makes this tool-free; a soldered tab cell requires care.
- Reassemble and verify. Close the console, power on, set the clock, and confirm a new save persists across a power cycle.
Replacing the battery is one of the easiest and most worthwhile maintenance jobs on a Saturn. Doing it before the cell fails completely lets you preserve the clock and avoid surprise save loss.
