RGB SCART
RGB SCART
SCART is the most common way to carry the Saturn's native RGB signal to a CRT or scaler. The connector bundles the red, green, blue, and sync lines into one rugged plug that European televisions accept directly. With a properly wired cable, this is the simplest path to the Saturn's best analog picture.
European SCART versus JP-21
Two cable standards share the same physical connector but differ electrically. European SCART follows the standard TV pinout. JP-21 is a Japanese standard that places several signals on different pins. They are not interchangeable: plugging a JP-21 cable into a European SCART socket can produce no picture, wrong colors, or in rare cases stress the display. Always match the cable to the equipment.
Sync considerations
The Saturn outputs composite video on its sync line, which doubles as composite sync for RGB. Most CRTs and scalers lock onto this without trouble. Some displays prefer a clean separated sync; cables with an inline sync stripper solve occasional rolling or instability.
Choosing a cable
Buy from makers who document the exact pinout and console region. A cable labeled simply "Saturn SCART" without specifying SCART versus JP-21 is a gamble. Confirm shielding and whether a sync stripper is included before purchase.
For flat-panel owners, run the SCART output into a dedicated upscaler rather than relying on a TV's often-poor built-in analog handling. The combination of a clean RGB SCART cable and a good scaler is hard to beat.
