AGB-001 (original)
AGB-001 (Original)
The AGB-001 is the launch model from 2001, the wide tablet shape most people picture when they think of a Game Boy Advance. It runs on two AA batteries, has a satisfying button layout, and plays the full GBA library plus older Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges.
The catch: the screen
This model's biggest weakness is its reflective, unlit screen. It relies entirely on ambient light, which means it looks great in direct sunlight and nearly invisible indoors. For years this kept the original out of favor, but it is exactly why the AGB-001 is the most popular candidate for a modern screen kit.
Why mod this model
- Roomy interior: compared with the SP, there is more space to fit a kit's ribbon and board.
- Comfortable form factor: the wide grip suits larger hands.
- Dramatic improvement: a backlight kit turns the worst stock screen into one of the best.
Modding options
The AGB-001 accepts any GBA flashcart with no modification. For the display, an IPS or backlight kit transforms usability and is the single most worthwhile upgrade for this model.
Best starter project
If you want one console to mod and enjoy, a flashcart plus an IPS kit in an AGB-001 is the classic, rewarding build.
