Screen tearing

Diagnosing screen tearing may require opening the console to inspect the display ribbon. Power down first and handle the thin ribbon cable gently; it creases and tears easily.

Troubleshooting: Screen Tearing

Screen tearing, where the image splits, jitters, or shows shifting lines, most often points to the display ribbon cable rather than the LCD itself, especially after an IPS screen installation.

  1. Reproduce it. Note whether the tearing is constant or appears only when the unit is flexed or jostled. Movement-triggered tearing strongly suggests a loose or marginal ribbon connection.
  2. Reseat the ribbon. Open the console and check that the screen ribbon is fully and squarely seated in its connector. A partly inserted ribbon causes lines and tearing.
  3. Check the ribbon version. Many IPS kits ship multiple ribbon options. If tearing persists, switching to the V2 ribbon resolves it on a large share of installs; an incompatible ribbon is a frequent cause.
  4. Inspect for damage. Look for creases, tears, or pinch marks on the ribbon. A damaged cable must be replaced.

V2 ribbon first

If you installed an IPS kit and see tearing, try the V2 ribbon before anything else. It is the single most common fix for this exact symptom.

Once the correct, undamaged ribbon is fully seated, tearing should disappear. If it continues with a known-good V2 ribbon, suspect the LCD board itself.
