Glossary

Modding communities lean on shorthand. Here are the terms you will meet most often across this wiki.

Hardware terms

  • Flashcart: a cartridge with a microSD slot that loads games from files instead of fixed chips.
  • IPS panel: a modern LCD type with vivid colors and wide viewing angles, used in screen kits.
  • Backlight: lighting behind the screen that shines through the image; what the original GBA lacks.
  • Front light: an older lighting approach used in the AGS-001 that lights the screen from the front, often unevenly.
  • Transplant: moving a complete screen assembly from one model into another.
  • Shell: the plastic housing of the console.

Software terms

  • ROM: the data file that represents a game cartridge.
  • Save file: stored game progress, kept either on the cart or on the SD card.
  • Homebrew: software made by the community rather than the original publisher.
  • Firmware: the menu software that runs on a flashcart itself.

Model codes

  • AGB the original tablet-shaped GBA.
  • AGS the clamshell Game Boy Advance SP.
  • OXY the GBA Micro's internal code.
