Modding communities lean on shorthand. Here are the terms you will meet most often across this wiki.
Hardware terms
- Flashcart: a cartridge with a microSD slot that loads games from files instead of fixed chips.
- IPS panel: a modern LCD type with vivid colors and wide viewing angles, used in screen kits.
- Backlight: lighting behind the screen that shines through the image; what the original GBA lacks.
- Front light: an older lighting approach used in the AGS-001 that lights the screen from the front, often unevenly.
- Transplant: moving a complete screen assembly from one model into another.
- Shell: the plastic housing of the console.
Software terms
- ROM: the data file that represents a game cartridge.
- Save file: stored game progress, kept either on the cart or on the SD card.
- Homebrew: software made by the community rather than the original publisher.
- Firmware: the menu software that runs on a flashcart itself.
Model codes
- AGB the original tablet-shaped GBA.
- AGS the clamshell Game Boy Advance SP.
- OXY the GBA Micro's internal code.
