AGS-101 (backlit SP)

AGS-101 (Backlit SP)

The AGS-101 is the later revision of the Game Boy Advance SP, and it is the one most collectors hunt for. It looks identical to the front-lit AGS-001 on the outside, but inside it carries a true backlit screen that is bright, even, and genuinely pleasant to use straight from the factory.

Why it is prized

  • Excellent stock screen: no kit needed; the display is already among the best original options.
  • Compact and rechargeable: the clamshell folds shut to protect the screen and built-in battery.
  • Donor value: its panel can be transplanted into other models.

What modding looks like

For most owners, the only mod an AGS-101 needs is a flashcart, which works with no internal changes. There is little reason to touch the screen since it is already backlit.

The AGS-101 also serves as a screen donor. Its panel can be moved into an AGB-001 or another shell, though that means sacrificing a working SP, so it is usually only done when a 101 has a broken hinge or shell.

Buying tip

Because AGS-001 and AGS-101 look the same, sellers sometimes mislabel them. Confirm the bright, even screen in a dark room before paying a premium.
