IPS/backlight kit

IPS / Backlight Kit

An IPS or backlight kit is the single biggest visual upgrade you can give an older Game Boy Advance. It swaps the dim factory screen for a bright, vivid modern panel with adjustable brightness, transforming how the console feels to use.

What a kit includes

  • The IPS panel: a modern LCD with rich color and wide viewing angles.
  • A driver board and ribbon: the electronics that connect the panel to the console.
  • Mounting adhesive: to hold the new panel securely behind the lens.

Which models benefit

  • AGB-001: the ideal candidate, since its stock screen is unlit and the interior has room.
  • AGS-001: a strong upgrade from the uneven front light, but the shell must be trimmed to fit.
  • AGS-101 and Micro: already backlit, so a kit is rarely worth it.

Things to know

Kits vary in features. Some offer multiple brightness levels, color tweaks, or pixel-grid effects controlled by button combinations. Read the kit's documentation, because the install steps and any required shell trimming differ between brands and models.

Buy the right kit

Order a kit made specifically for your model. An AGB-001 kit will not fit an SP, and SP kits differ between the two SP revisions.
