SD card preparation

Formatting erases everything on the card. Copy off any files you want to keep first, and double-check you have selected the right drive before you format.

SD Card Preparation

A correctly prepared microSD card is the foundation of a smooth flashcart experience. Most loading problems trace back to a card that was formatted wrong or filled in the wrong order.

Choosing a card

  • Capacity: 8 to 32GB is ample for the entire GBA library.
  • Brand: use a reputable card; counterfeit cards report fake capacities and corrupt saves.
  • Speed: a standard everyday card is fast enough for the GBA.
  1. Back up first
Copy any existing contents to your computer before touching the card.
  2. Format correctly
Format the card to FAT32, which is the format GBA flashcarts expect.
  3. Add firmware
Copy your cart's operating system or kernel files to the card's root.
  4. Add games
Place ROM files into a tidy folder so the menu lists them clearly.

FAT32 is key

Larger cards sometimes default to exFAT, which flashcarts may not read. Reformat to FAT32 if your card came set up differently.
